Meet our founder

Hi, I'm Shannan

ZIGGY & ZOE: my inspiration cats

I rescued Zig and Zoe in 2010 from the tiny animal shelter on Misawa Air Base where I was stationed in Japan. They were just three years old at the time, a bonded pair of tuxedo litter mates, curious, funky tailed, pink-nosed, and both definitely dressed for the occasion.

Between moving, training, deploying and everything else that comes with military life, the idea of putting Zig and Zoe in “boarding” that consisted of a 24″ wire cage was unacceptable. Nothing in existence was good enough for my Zig and Zoe, so I hurled myself into debt and built something that was. Sadly, they’ve both since passed. These two very special cats were by my side during a transformational phase of life and growth, so losing them felt like a heavy end to a very eventful chapter.

Zoe was my little healing cat. Always knew when I needed her most, so loyal, delicate and sweet in a way that I’d never experienced with any other cat. All she wanted was to be warm and have snacks. She was the cat in our original logo, with her little hooked periscope tail. Her memory and my indescribable love for her will carry on in spirit, as she suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from what turned out to be oral cancer on Superbowl Sunday 2019.

Zig was my quintessential boy kitty. He was rambunctious and unaware of anyone else’s needs but his own, and he was also a total mama’s boy :). He’d watch me and follow me around the house, always wanting to “help” with things like folding laundry… by laying on the warm clothes, or attacking the sheets while they were put on the bed. Always a goof ball. I had Ziggy for a whole year after his cancer diagnosis. It was stolen time before his passing in July 2021 I’ll always cherish, and the best part is that he got to meet our son 🙂

My heart is not whole, but Zig and Zoe will always be a part of our story.
